A large mound projects from the bluff line of the river Irthing. On the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map it was marked as a tumulus. However, it has also been alleged to be a natural feature or a motte. There is no evidence of an excavation. (PastScape–ref. Perriam and Robinson)

SMR record 5213; 'A large mound projects from the bluff line of the river. It has always been considered natural in origin, but if not natural, its shape indicates it is a motte.' Quotes Cowper (1899) and Clare (1982).

No record of excavation. (Perriam and Robinson 1998)

Gatehouse Comments

The location, by a bridge and close to a mill, certainly looks to be one of manorial significance. However, the medieval bridge was not here but 320m upstream (PastScape record 12681)
