Town walls which received stone in 1450. Had five gate of which Fisher Gate of c.1384 and mid C14 Barbican gate protecting bridge survive, though substantially rebuilt. Had two storey Great Bulwark, well provisioned with cannon, possibly modified from earlier castle. Earth ramparts survive. (some suggest that only gates where ever of stone)
