A stonehouse or bastle was noted in the 1603 survey of fortified places at Townfoot, Gilsand:
NY549507. 'Jo Iveson...a stonehouse...' This is possibly still standing at Townfoot Farm and is shown as a house on the 1865 OS map. (PastScape ref. Perriam and Robinson)
