A stonehouse or bastle was noted in the 1603 survey of fortified places at Townfoot, Gilsand:
NY549506. 'Tos. Pattenson...a stonehouse...of the Kings Fee...' There are possible remains of this in a garden wall of West Cottage. (PastScape ref. Perriam and Robinson)
