The following features were mapped from poor quality air photographs:- Potential Medieval motte, seen as earthworks. Morphological description: one medium size (4-15m), amorphous feature. Centred at:-SD 6659 7157 (Morph No. NY.1210.19.1) Potential Medieval bailey, seen as earthworks. Morphological description: an incomplete, rectangular enclosure, 30m by 30m, defined by 1 ditch and 1 bank, with 3 sides visible. Centred at:-SD 6662 7157 (Morph No. NY.1210.19.2) (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Fackon House (now called Faccon Farm) is next to site overlooking possible crossing point of River Greta. Site is not an obvious manorial centre. Area of many small old coal pits and many small mounds in area. The supposed ditch may be an old water course. The supposed motte is not separated from the supposed bailey by a ditch, as one might expect. Close proximity of old coal pits and lack of visible settlement make this site doubtful.
