Parker writes "The town formerly had a castle, and walls, and gates, but of these the names only remain" Roffe writes this is " entirely a mis-reading of various C14 Patent Roll entries referring to the 'castle (castra) and towns of Stamford and Grantham'."

Gatehouse Comments

Of the road name Castlegate Roffe writes "it is late and, I suspect, a function of conscious antiquianizing." As with other towns in the Danelaw, notably York, the street name 'gate' may derive from the Danish gata meaning street, rather than from Anglo-Saxon gaet. Map reference for parish church.
